Surgical Correction of Peyronie?s Disease Using Tissue Grafts
Tissue grafts is one more popular method of managing Peyronie?s Disease. This is one of the surgical procedures that is available to people suffering from the condition and is more sought out by people who do not wish to see any shortening of the length of the penis that can happen if they undergo Nesbit procedure, another surgical option for managing the condition.
This surgical method involves the total surgical removal of the plaque that has formed within the penis and attempting straightening procedure to remove the curvature of the penis. Many surgeons will advise this procedure to the patient especially when the plaque formation is quite big or when the curvature is quite extreme. Here, the tissue that is lost when the plaque present in the connective tissue layer is removed is replaced by using tissue grafts.
The tissue grafts that are placed to replace the removed tissue can be of different types that include autografts (tissue graft material removed from the person?s own body from some other area) and synthetic tissue grafts like Dacron mesh or Goretex material. But, unlike autografts that cause no negative immunologic response, synthetic tissue grafts can lead to problems like scar formation or fibrosis.
Xenografts are another option. Xenografts are tissue material of either human (not from the same person) or from animal sources. Although these are much easier to procure, they too have the possibility of causing negative immune responses and chances of rejection.
Another common issue that needs to be administered is the problem of contraction after the placement of the graft. This can lead to problems like scarring and cause the shortening of the penis. These are factors that one needs to consider before opting for going in for tissue grafts.
Placing Penile implants are the last treatment of choice that is available to a patient suffering from problems of Peyronie?s disease. Earlier, penile implants were the first line of treatment for people suffering from erectile dysfunction but these days introduction of newer methods have helped get rid of erectile dysfunction without using implants. But, still this method is used as a last resort when other methods have failed to eliminate erectile problems.
The implants that are placed in the penis are cylinders made out of plastic and are of solid or inflatable types. This is surgically inserted into the Corpora Cavernosa. As these are made out of biocompatible materials, there are no possibilities of rejection due to negative immune responses. The surgeon either places the implant passively allowing it to do the job of correcting the curvature or will attempt to correct the curvature prior to placing the implant so that the implant will hold the penis against the curvature and provide better results.
Before attempting any surgical technique, patients should try out other noninvasive techniques and try out a surgical method only when other methods have failed to provide results. Trying out surgery very early or insufficient surgical correction can cause the condition to recur or the procedure to fail. Although many patients who have undergone surgery have had satisfactory results, surgery has its own set of risks and problems that can happen that have damaging permanent after effects.
