The shape of the penis is not a concern for many people who are born and blessed with normal penises. But, there are many people out there who are not so lucky and experience problems with the shape of their penis that has untoward effects on the sex life of the individual.

So, it might come as a surprise to you to know that there are many people out there who do not have perfect ramrod shape to their penis and have abnormal curvature to the penis. Some even develop abnormal curvature over a period of time due to the formation of scar tissue on the penis. This is a condition known as Peyronie?s disease and is known to affect about 1% of male population.

This condition is termed after the surgeon of Louis XIV of France by name Francois de la Peyronie who was the first to identify the condition and suggest a remedy way back in the year 1743. While it is not known properly as to what causes the problem, the way the problem is caused is known.

The chamber of the penis known as Corpora Cavernosa is covered by a thick layer of connective tissue known as tunica albuginea. People suffering from Peyronie?s disease experience formation of scar tissue in this layer of connective tissue that hinders normal erection and also causes the abnormal curvature of the penis during erection.

The condition is painful in the beginning but later the pain dissipates and no pain is felt. But, the main problem the person faces is the abnormal curvature of the penis when erect and reduction in the penis length when flaccid.

Many people with this condition are still able to have sex and have no pain whatsoever when they indulge in sex. Although it can occur in any race and age group of people, it is more frequent in Caucasians over the age of 40. But, one thing you need to remember is that it is not transmitted from one person to the other nor is the condition some kind of incurable cancer.

Although the diagnosis of the condition is quite easy, it is a very difficult condition to correct. While it is an Urologist who has specialization in treating this kind of problems, not all of them are actually well versed with the condition or providing treatment for it. Some people with this condition are prescribed medication with L-arginine and Sildenafil. Sometimes, in very severe conditions of this disease, surgery might be necessary.
